No Matter What is Happening …

When Matthew introduces the birth of Jesus, it is the name announced by the prophet Isaiah which he shares with us — Immanuel. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means, “God with us.” Matt 1:23

We sometimes romanticize the times surrounding Jesus’ birth, painting them as wonderful times. More likely they were a mixture of terrific and tragic experiences for many. Read more …


How Loving Are We – Really?

There seems to be an emotional high that comes with Easter. Many report experiencing the closeness and joy of God after joining others in the act of worship. Yet just the other day I read the following statements which tell another story: “The church is almost indistinguishable from the world…Our growth in love for God does not necessarily translate into a more mature love for others…Our inability to resolve conflicts maturely remains one of the most pressing problems in our churches.” Pete and Geri Scazzero list these findings, among others, in their book, Emotionally Healthy Skills 2.0. It was an amazed, re-energized Mary Magdalene who came running, shouting to an early gathering of confused disciples just three days after the dark happenings of Calvary, “I have seen the Lord!”  Those who lived next door to the resurrection of Christ eagerly communicated the thrill of their experiences to others. Storm Warning

Right now I’m looking out the window of my study while preparing for Sunday morning.  A beautiful blanket of snow covers the ground. It has been snowing for several hours. A change, however, is on its way. Local weather forecasters are announcing a winter “storm warning”.  In the middle of it all is our senior high youth. They are away for a weekend Youth Retreat, aptly titled “Blizzard”. Read more …
